I am the proud aunt of Chandler Collin Clark. The purpose of this letter is to introduce my nephew to you. Chandler was taken from us on October 24, 2009 at the age of 17. He was a victim of teen violence right here in our community. I find myself sitting here asking how do I tell you about my wonderful nephew and what he has meant to myself and our family in a few short paragraphs? The truth is I don’t how to tell you everything I want or need to, so I am going to summarize who Chandler was and what a wonderful life he lived during his short 17 years.

They say it's not the number of years you live but the dash that is between them. For the dash represents all the things you have done and the people you have touched during those years. April 6, 1992 - October 24, 2009. Chandler lived just a short 17 years of what should have been a long, wonderful and productive life.  However, if one were to look at Chandler's dash they would assume it was the life of a much older person. One who had lived life to the fullest, one who met every day with a smile and hope, one who wanted to make sure others were happy and one who touched more people than even we will probably ever know.

Chandler was in fact a miracle baby. My brother and sister-in-law tried for over 17 years to have a baby and once they had given up; Chandler made his presence into this world. From the day he was born, there was something just a bit more special about him. Maybe we had all waited so long or maybe because he was a blessing from above.

We were all so proud of that little boy who blossomed into such a warm, loving and well rounded young man. He was so handsome with blue eyes and contagious smile. He was entertaining and always the center of attention whether it was his dancing, jokes or the accents he did.  He left everyone smiling or laughing and asking for more. He was an athlete, in fact a 3-sport athlete. Whether it is baseball (which he was coached by his dad), football or basketball, Chandler always had the biggest cheering section. Most of our Friday nights and Saturdays for as long as we can remember involved cheering Chandler on from the stands.

...the stands

Prior to his death Chandler was set to start mentoring a young boy on his school bus. That boy sat with Chandler's jacket on the school bus every day. Chandler had also befriended a young female friend who has been sexually assaulted. He was discreetly helping her through this traumatic time with empathy and compassion. Chandler also had become friends with a young boy at school who was homeless. Chandler offered this boy dinner at his home, hot showers and rides where he needed to go. This young man, an artist, in turn taught Chandler how to draw in appreciation. We never knew this boy’s story until we saw him after Chandler's death. He told us that Chandler was his only true friend at one point in his life. These kids are a true testament to Chandler's ever-loving heart and compassion.

My nephew grew up to be such a warm, loving and well-rounded young man. He was so handsome, entertaining and athletic. He was adored by female and male friends alike. At last count I knew of ten people who called Chandler their best friend, everyone was so drawn to his energy and carefree zest for life. If you were to look at a picture of Chandler’s friends, it would look something like a United Nations photo.

He never cared about color, shape, size or status of anyone. If Chandler liked you and brought you into his life, differences mattered not. Loyalty was the word that would have best described Chandler when he came to his friends of all ages.

Chandler’s memorial service brought in over 900 people to say their last goodbyes. Young and old, friends and teachers, local businessmen and community leaders all were touched by our Chandler. That day more than ever we realized how special our little boy was. Chandler’s friends still stop by to check on us and several of them call or email just to say hello. These gestures are clear representations of what Chandler meant to his friends and the values they shared. Chandler Clark's life represented what the future of teens should be...honest, caring and overall an outstanding contribution to society. He was someone who added value  to his community and those around him. We all knew Chandler would be an angel; we just never expected him to have to leave and claim his wings so soon.

My family has dedicated our lives to increasing the awareness of teen violence and spreading Chandler's Legacy. We have teamed up with the St. Cloud Rotary Club in an effort to gain more community awareness and to allow us to host more community events. We have also devoted our efforts to participating in community events such as walks, parades and festivals to continue to spread the word about teen violence. We look forward to continuing to educate those in community about the dangers of teen violence.

...teen violence

We have had offers to work with the Osceola County Sherriff's Department and the St. Cloud Police Community Outreach Division to spread the message that teen violence will not be tolerated in our community and to go into the local schools to spread our story and will be doing so soon. We were blessed to work with St. Cloud Police Departments Captain Dunn with his Inbounds Inc. group, in which Chandler’s story is being used to show at risk teens that anyone can fall victim to senseless violence. We have been blessed to share his story on local news stations and AM radio stations. We are also continuing talks with the Osceola County School Board to help raise awareness of teen violence in our schools and community. We are researching how to put in place a teen violence program in the schools in memory of our beloved Chandler Clark and hope to have it in place within the next few years.

Each year we host 2 fund-raising events to benefit the Chandler Clark Memorial Scholarship, in which each year local high school seniors will be granted a scholarship in Chandler Clark's name. When we started Chandler’s Legacy Inc. our hope was to save at least one teenager, to date we have had numerous success stories. We have also been fortunate enough to distribute 100+ scholarships within the last 16 years. Several years ago, we were recognized/honored by the Osceola Education Foundation, which works with local scholarship programs in matching 50 cents on every dollar we award per scholarship. This was so exciting for our family. We have honored Chandler and made him very proud with our dedication to local teens.

We are looking to partnering with businesses like yours to help increase awareness of teen violence and save our teens. Any donation would be much appreciated and help us move forward in our goal of spreading Chandler’s Legacy in our schools, community and saving our teenagers from violence.

As of 4/25/11 we became Chandler’s Legacy Inc. and have been granted our 501c3 non-profit organization status. Our 501c3 certificate # is 61-1654484. All donations are tax-deductible.

Thank you for taking time to get to know, if only in words, the life of my wonderful nephew Chandler Collin Clark. Please feel free to call me if you have any questions.

With sincere gratitude,

Donna Drake
